How to Put the Reward System to Work in Your Class

  • Set Class Goals

Have behavior goals for the class that are achievable and measurable. Letting students contribute to these goals make them more involved and motivated to achieve them. For example, giving students 20 seconds to start cleaning the classroom once the cleaning music starts.

  • Define How You Will Use the Reward System

Explaining to students when rewards will be given to them. Give students a clear understanding of your intentions and expectations. For example, telling students they will be rewarded every time they use “nice hands” with their friends and teachers.

  • Explain Why You Gave a Reward

Giving students feedback on the reward they were given and why they were given the reward. Letting students know that they received the reward for a good behavior and they should continue this behavior. For example, saying “Good job Johnny, you received this award for throwing your trash away when you were finished.”

  • Give Students a Voice

It is important for students to be able to participate in choosing rewards. When students have the choice of the rewards they can receive, students will become more motivated to earn them. For example, letting students contribute to a list of prizes they would want to receive. The teacher still has the final say!

  • Reward Early

Rewards should be given shortly after the desired behavior occurs. If you reward the students soon, they won’t forget what they did to earn the reward. For example, as soon as a student starts to clean up reward them then instead of once they’re completely finished.

  • Lessen the Rewards Over Time

To avoid addiction to rewards, lessen the amount given to students. Raise expectations of students so they have to continue to try harder in the classroom to achieve behavior goals. For example, once students have been receiving an award for cleaning 3 items, make it where they have to clean the entire section in order to earn a reward.

  • Give Random Rewards

Rewarding students randomly will keep students on trying their hardest throughout the day and continuing to practice good behaviors. For example, randomly giving a student a prize when you see them helping a friend in need of help without being instructed to.
